In these memoirs of her life in Cuba until she was fifteen years old when she went into exile, Dr. Uva de Aragón tells us the first-person story of her closest relatives, as well as her first games, readings, trips, teachers, schools, and friends. With an agile prose and fresh look, she reveals the pain of the loss of her father at an early age and the illusions of first loves, as well as delicious anecdotes about personalities of Cuban culture she had the privilege of knowing.
At one point, public life enters fully into the privacy of the home of the teenager who was Uva, and her days develop against the background of the political violence that plagued the country then. At the same time, these pages reflect the customs of a society, in an era that, like the life of the writer, changed radically in Cuba in 1959, and perhaps, in the long run, in the whole world.
